Festival Location

The Halton Children’s Water Festival (HCWF) provides elementary students in grades two through five with the opportunity to learn about the importance of one of our most precious resources . . . water.

The Festival is co-hosted by Conservation Halton and Halton Region in partnership with the Halton District School Board, the Halton Catholic District School Board, the City of Burlington, the Town of Halton Hills, the Town of Milton and the Town of Oakville in order to create a successful and financially sustainable water festival in Halton. A number of community sponsors also support the Festival.

In total, the HCWF boasts over 50 activities that concentrate on four key areas of water education. All the activities encourage a fun atmosphere for learning while meeting Ontario’s curriculum requirements.

The 2010 Halton Children's Water Festival will take place from September 28 to October 1, 2010 at Kelso Conservation Area. Halton school principals and teachers can find out more now by visit www.hcwf.ca. Who can attend?

The Halton Children's Water Festival welcomes students in grades two through five, including the two/three, three/four and four/five combined classes from the Halton Catholic District School Board, the Halton District School Board and Halton’s private elementary schools.

What do students learn?

1. Water science and technology: Students will learn about the water cycle, the physical science of ground and surface water, the treatment and distribution systems and the interactions between water and technology in their daily lives.

2. Water conservation and protection: Students will investigate how human activity can impact water. They will learn how to conserve, protect and manage water at home, at school and in the community.

3. Water health and safety: Students will learn about safety around water and its role in human health. 

4. Water and society: Students will learn about the history of water, the relationship between people and the uses of water, and how to become stewards of water in their local and global community.

As mandated by the Children’s Water Education Council (CWEC), one of the goals of children’s water festivals is to, “empower children to initiate change within their homes, schools and communities . . . by taking information and new found respect back to their own environment.” This is the exact approach we take at the Halton Children’s Water Festival (HCWF).

The HCWF provides elementary school students with hands-on, educational opportunities to explore the importance of ground and surface water in their communities and everyday lives. The first HCWF took place in September 2006 and educated more than 3000 students over three days about our most important natural resource – water. The Festival has grown every year and in 2010 more than 4000 children are expected to attend over four days.
